Our orthodontist at Ormiston Orthodontics provides many orthodontic options for patients. Depending on the patient, Dr. J. Perry Ormiston may recommend any of the following appliances:
Elastics (Rubber Bands)
Elastics can be worn with a variety of other appliances, improving the alignment and fit of the upper and lower dental arch. To help ensure their efficiency, bands should be worn as prescribed.
Forsus is often used as a replacement for traditional headgear, helping the alignment of the teeth and treating overbites.
Headgear
Headgear treats overbites and underbites, where the upper or lower jaw is pushed forward. The appliance gradually pulls the teeth back into position.
The Herbst appliance is most often prescribed to patients whose teeth are still developing. It is worn over the molars for around 12 to 15 months, pushing the lower jaw forward and the upper molars back.
By adjusting the expander, this appliance gradually pushes the molars outward. Once the teeth have been shifted into place, patients will continue to wear the appliance to help prevent regression.
Positioners
Positioners are usually only worn for four to eight weeks, after the orthodontic treatment has moved the teeth into their final position.
Retainers
After an orthodontic treatment, our orthodontist may recommend a removable or non-removable (fixed) retainer. Our practice will go over how to take care of the appliance and how it can keep your teeth aligned.
Separators or Spacers
These small rubber circles push apart the teeth to make room for other orthodontic treatments. When our office places spacers in between the teeth, it is important to take care when flossing, eating sticky foods or using toothpicks.
Twin Block Appliance
This treatment attaches two appliances onto the upper and lower dental arches, shifting the jaw into position. The appliance can be worn while eating, though it can be removed for cleaning.
